Lactate metabolism during exercise - An old story with new ending, but what to do now?

While great pioneer scientists of the last century including, including Meyerhof (34), Warburg (47), Hill and colleagues (22), and the Coris (10), made discoveries that influenced thinking until the present, a common feature of all their efforts was that important parameters of lactate flux and glucose-glycogen-lactate interactions were never measured in humans. Seeing those limitations, we set out to make the necessary measurements. [...] Because it was that parameters of lactate flux at the lactate threshold (LT), including rates of lactate production (appearance Ra), disposal (Rd), oxidation (Rox), and conversion to glucose (gluconeogenesis, GNG, RGNG), had not been determined, we endeavored to use dual isotope tracer technology to investigate the LT in untrained men and trained bicyclists during leg ergometry cycling.
