Judo athletes' methods of weight reduction prior to a sport performance

The aim of our work was to know the habits of the Slovak judo athletes while reducing weight and verify the existence of the difference between men and women in the methods used to reduce weight. The research group was 73 Slovak judo athletes (female, n = 27; male, n = 46) of junior and senior category, who were the full members of Slovak Judo Federation. As the main method of data collection we optioned for an anonymous verified questionnaire. For the data analysis and subsequent interpretation we used statistical method Chi - square, parametric unpaired t - test and the logical analysis. Based on the analyses of the responses we find no significant differences in the methods used to reduce weight between man and women. As regards the next findings, men more often tend to lose weight in the competitive season than women. (Chi-square = 2,96, p = 0, 01). The reason for that is more competitions organized for men in Slovakia. The highest average rate of weight loss before a performance was 5,7 kg (men) and 4,8 kg (women) and the difference was significant (t=2,37, p= 0,05). An average weight loss was 2,6 kg (men) and 1,8 kg (women) (t = 2, 47, p = 0, 01). We conclude that the habits of reducing weight are in Slovak judo men and women identical, with no significant differences recorded.
